Greece extended protection for Ukrainians until 2027: what the decision means

According to ТСН: Greece has extended the temporary protection period for Ukrainian refugees for one more year - until March 4, 2027.

This information was confirmed by the Embassy of Ukraine in Greece, citing the government’s decision.

“According to the decision of the Minister of Migration and Asylum of the Hellenic Republic, Notis Mitarachi, the temporary protection period for persons displaced from Ukraine has been officially extended for another year - until March 4, 2027,” the diplomatic representation stated.

The full text of the document and details for citizens have been published on the website of the Ministry of Migration and Asylum of Greece.

As reported by the agency, residence permits expiring between March 2023 and March 2026 will be automatically extended. Ukrainians will not have to take additional measures to renew their documents.

Conditions for new entries

Citizens planning to travel outside Greece will be able to renew their permits in person starting from February 16, 2026. For this, they need to contact asylum offices in Attica, Thessaloniki, Western Greece, Crete, or Rhodes, presenting tickets (in printed or electronic form). The renewal process is possible without prior appointment.

Those entering Greece for the first time will obtain temporary protection status according to the usual procedure until March 4, 2027.

Changes in Poland

In addition, changes for Ukrainians are planned in Poland. The government has developed a new draft law that provides for the gradual abolition of key provisions of the special law supporting Ukrainian citizens. The main change concerns the legalization of work.

Thus, Ukrainians in Greece can remain for another year, emphasizing the country’s solidarity with refugees. At the same time, changes in Poland may affect the employment opportunities for Ukrainians, requiring careful study of the new rules and requirements.
