Survey Reveals Ukrainians’ Emotional Bond with the EU: How Many Feel a Sense of Unity?.
How Ukrainians Connect Emotionally with Their Country and the European Union
According to Espreso.tv: A survey called 'Common Contours,' conducted by the Rating Group, has uncovered a strong emotional attachment among Ukrainians to both their homeland and the European Union. The findings show that 93% of Ukrainians feel an emotional connection to their country, with 69% reporting a notably strong tie. This highlights a deep sense of patriotism and national identity.
European Ties and Perceptions of Support
When it comes to Europe, 51% of Ukrainians say they have an emotional link to the EU, while 56% feel connected to Europe as a whole. For comparison, the average emotional connection to the EU across its member states stands at 62%. Ukraine ranks fourth among candidate countries on this measure. For instance:
- Albania – 70%
- Montenegro – 68%
- North Macedonia – 55%
- Moldova – 49%
Other countries show lower rates: the United Kingdom and Bosnia and Herzegovina both at 42%, Turkey at 33%, Serbia at 25%, and Georgia at 20%.
Confidence in European support is rising among Ukrainians. In June 2026, 64% of respondents viewed Europe as a reliable ally. However, 56% believe the United States is pressuring Kyiv to make concessions to Russia. A key milestone in Ukraine’s integration efforts was the opening of the first negotiation cluster, 'Fundamentals,' in the EU accession process on June 15, 2026.
The 'Common Contours' survey underscores the significant emotional ties Ukrainians have with their own country and Europe, which could shape future steps toward European integration. Growing trust in Europe’s support points to a positive shift in perceptions of international relations, though concerns about U.S. pressure on Ukrainian policy remain relevant. This reflects the complexity of Ukraine’s foreign policy amid global challenges and its drive for integration.
