Ukraine Implements Pension Increase
According to TSN.ua: As of January 1, 2026, pension payments in Ukraine have been raised. The average pension has increased by 107.83 hryvnias, reaching 6,544.62 hryvnias, up from the previous average of 6,436.79 hryvnias. At the start of 2026, Ukraine has 10.2 million pensioners, of whom 2.8 million continue to work. This adjustment comes as the government seeks to balance social support with long-term fiscal sustainability.
Changes in Pension Amounts
The changes have affected various categories of retirees. The average pension for working pensioners rose from 7,069.37 to 7,160.10 hryvnias. The distribution of pension amounts is as follows:
- 31.06% of pensioners receive payments ranging from 3,001 to 4,000 hryvnias;
- 29.64% receive between 5,001 and 10,000 hryvnias;
- 20.21% get pensions within the 4,001 to 5,000 hryvnia bracket;
- 15.41% receive over 10,000 hryvnias;
- 3.68% receive pensions of up to 3,000 hryvnias.
Among all pensioners, the breakdown by type of pension is:
- 72.76% receive old-age pensions;
- 14.7% have disability pensions;
- 6.92% receive survivor's pensions;
- 5.07% are on pensions for long service;
- 0.51% receive social pensions;
- 0.04% receive lifelong financial maintenance as judges.
Starting in 2026, to retire at age 60, an individual must have at least 33 years of insurance coverage.
The increase in Ukrainian pension payments reflects government efforts to improve the financial situation of retirees amid ongoing economic challenges.
This raise is a significant step, given that many pensioners receive amounts that may not cover their basic living costs. With this distribution of payments and the new retirement eligibility requirements, a shift in the pension system's structure is underway, which could impact future generations of Ukrainian retirees.
