Ukrainian elderly drivers will change the rules of their licenses

A bill No. 8082 has been submitted to the Ukrainian Parliament, which provides changes for elderly drivers.

According to this proposal, drivers aged 65 and over will be required to renew their driver's licenses every 5 years. For people over 70 years old, the validity period of the license will be reduced to 2 years, and for drivers over 75 years old - the license must be changed annually.

In order to continue their driving rights, elderly drivers will need to pass two important verification stages: cognitive function testing and medical examination. These procedures will help determine whether an individual can safely operate a vehicle and correctly assess the road situation. If a driver fails these checks, they will be denied the right to operate a vehicle.

Such changes are being introduced in Ukraine to harmonize its legislation with the norms of the European Union. The EU is also increasing control over elderly drivers as part of the Vision Zero program, which aims to reduce the number of road accidents in Europe.
