Geneva Peace Talks Stalled as Russia Blocks Progress.
Geneva Talks: Current Status and Future Prospects
According to TSN.ua: The Geneva peace negotiations between Russia and Ukraine have reached a deadlock, with Russia's continued insistence on radical demands preventing any meaningful compromise. The third round of these trilateral talks was held on February 17, with the primary goal of establishing mechanisms to end the full-scale war. This diplomatic impasse underscores the immense challenges in resolving a conflict that has now lasted for over a year.
Washington has set a clear deadline for a final agreement to be signed by June 2026. In this context, Vladimir Medinsky has re-entered the negotiation process, yet tensions remain high. Time is no longer an ally for Russian President Vladimir Putin, as the Russian economy falters and the Russian army's losses over the last two months have exceeded its capacity to replenish them.
Ukraine's Stance and Moscow's Position
Ukraine has expressed a willingness to hold elections following a two-month ceasefire, but only if it receives security guarantees from the United States. Meanwhile, Moscow's position remains unchanged, as it categorically rejects the presence of Western peacekeepers.

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy has also stated: “It is a major mistake to allow the aggressor to take something.” Furthermore, Andriy Sybiha expressed the view that “Moscow only understands the language of force.” This situation indicates that the Geneva talks require new approaches and decisive actions to achieve peace. With each side entrenched in rigid positions, the chances for a compromise appear slim.
The current negotiations reflect the complexity of the enduring conflict and point to the necessity for greater flexibility from both sides. Given the timeframe set by Washington and Moscow's hardline stance, it is crucial for the international community to engage more actively to find pathways to a peaceful settlement. The situation demands not only diplomacy but also strategic steps to prevent further escalation of the conflict.
