The USA presents an updated peace plan in Abu Dhabi: what has changed.
According to ТСН: Negotiations took place in the capital of the United Arab Emirates (UAE), Abu Dhabi, between representatives of the USA and Russia, with the Ukrainian delegation joining. These meetings were a continuation of the diplomatic progress achieved in Geneva.
Negotiations in Abu Dhabi
US Army Secretary Dan Driscoll met with Russian officials to present a new peace plan to end the war in Ukraine, which has significantly changed following discussions in Geneva. The Ukrainian delegation, led by Chief of the Main Intelligence Directorate Kyrylo Budanov, was also invited to Abu Dhabi.
According to Driscoll's spokesman, Army Lieutenant Colonel Jeff Tolbert, 'Late on Monday and throughout Tuesday, Secretary Driscoll and his team have been negotiating with the Russian delegation to achieve a lasting peace in Ukraine. The talks are going well, and we remain optimistic. Secretary Driscoll is working closely with the White House to advance these negotiations.'
Driscoll also plans to meet with Kyrylo Budanov to expedite the conclusion of a peace agreement. These talks are happening against the backdrop of a diplomatic process initiated in Geneva, where the parties sought to clarify the text ready for submission to the presidents.
However, the Kremlin claims it has not received the updated draft of the peace plan and refuses to comment on its participation in the negotiations in Abu Dhabi. Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov called these reports 'leaks', 'speculation', and 'spreading rumors' that undermine US initiatives.
What the updated 'Trump peace plan' entails
As a result of the negotiations in Geneva, an improved peace plan was developed that supports Ukraine's sovereignty and ensures sustainable peace. The initial version of the document, which consisted of 28 points, was reduced to 19, with some provisions amended or removed.
'All issues concerning Europe, including those regarding NATO, have been excluded from this plan,' noted German Foreign Minister Johann Wadephul. According to CBS News, Ukraine and the USA have reached a 'common understanding' regarding the peace plan, with only details remaining to be finalized.
President Donald Trump emphasized that the plan is not yet final and is still being worked on. 'Our delegation has returned from Geneva after negotiating with the American side and European partners, and now the list of steps to end the war is becoming workable,' said Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky.
Zelensky also assured that key aspects of the new peace plan will be brought up for discussion with Trump. 'This is our common principle, and millions of Ukrainians deserve decent peace,' he added. Ukraine has also agreed to limit the size of its army to 800 thousand personnel.
Russia, for its part, is expecting a new 'interim' version of the American peace plan, claiming to have only the initial version consisting of 28 points. Lavrov noted that any changes could 'undermine' efforts for regulation.
Meeting between Zelensky and Trump: what is known
The USA reported that it has achieved 'huge progress' in preparing the peace agreement and has invited Ukraine and Russia for further negotiations. 'We anticipate organizing a visit of the Ukrainian President to the USA soon to finalize and reach an agreement,' noted Secretary of the National Security and Defense Council of Ukraine Rustem Umerov.
The Telegraph claims that the meeting between Zelensky and Trump could take place this week. Key issues that have become stumbling blocks concern territorial exchanges and new security relationships between the USA, NATO, and Russia. It is noted that these matters may be deferred for further discussion.
Can the US peace plan stop the war in Ukraine
After the meetings in Geneva, Ukrainian and European diplomats declared success in countering the original peace plan. 'The new plan developed jointly by the United Kingdom, France, and Germany has excluded any reference to Ukraine surrendering land to Moscow,' journalists claim.
Key issues remain unchanged, including the possibility of Ukraine's membership. Despite diplomatic achievements, the prospects for peace in the near future remain uncertain. Observers believe that pressure on Putin's economy and army is growing, but the war may continue until its fourth anniversary.
Trump aims to conclude the standoff, but his Republican colleagues oppose this. It is crucial for the USA, EU, and Ukraine to overcome their vulnerabilities; otherwise, the Kremlin may conclude the war on its terms.
Moreover, Trump desires quick results but faces resistance from many participants in the process.
