Sharp Decline in North Korean Arms Transfers to Russia

According to TSN.ua: North Korea drastically curtailed its weapons shipments to Russia in January 2023, with only a single voyage by Russian vessels to North Korean ports recorded. This single docking event since the start of the year points to a significant reduction in the flow of military supplies between the two nations. This slowdown follows a period of intense military cooperation, which has drawn international condemnation and sanctions.

A Russian vessel moored at a pier associated with arms exports on January 14, 2023. The previous such visit had occurred on December 21, 2022, underscoring the recent drop in activity. Despite this lull, North Korea had already supplied Russia with an estimated 6.5 to over 8 million artillery shells in 2023, along with approximately 250 KN-23 ballistic missiles.

Types of Weaponry Supplied

Among the other military equipment transferred were:

  • Koksan long-range artillery pieces
  • 240mm and 107mm multiple rocket launcher systems
  • 60mm and 140mm mortars
  • Cluster munitions
  • 100mm tank shells for T-54/55 tanks

This inventory indicates that, despite the recent decrease in shipping frequency, North Korea has been a major source of significant weaponry for Russia's war effort.

The sudden drop in shipments may signal a shift in the relationship between Pyongyang and Moscow, potentially linked to tightened international sanctions or internal political calculations in either capital. Nevertheless, the sheer volume of materiel already transferred confirms a deep military partnership that continues to impact regional security and the broader geopolitical landscape.
