Investigation Concluded After Russian IL-18 Violates Finnish Airspace.
IL-18 Incident Overview
According to Espreso.tv: A Russian IL-18 military aircraft breached Finland's airspace for just two minutes. The plane, traveling from Russia to Kaliningrad, entered Finnish territory between Inkoo and Raseborg. The inquiry into this event has now been wrapped up, and the findings have been forwarded to the prosecutor for further legal action.
Finland's Response
Lieutenant Juho Sillanpää, who led the investigation, stated that Finland's Ministry of Defense suspected the aircraft might have been dodging a thunderstorm. In response, on May 27, Finland's Ministry of Foreign Affairs summoned a representative of the Russian Federation over this airspace violation. Earlier, on May 26, the ministry had also called in Russia's ambassador.
It is worth noting that on May 23, two Russian military aircraft likely violated Finnish airspace near Porvoo.
This incident highlights the strained relations between Finland and Russia, particularly amid recent airspace breaches. The summoning of diplomatic officials underscores the seriousness of the situation and could signal an escalation of tensions in the region. Understanding the reasons behind the airspace violation may also shape Finland's next diplomatic moves and those of other countries monitoring developments in the Baltic area.
