Belarus Warned of 500 Pre-Identified Targets If It Joins Attack, Says Ukrainian Official.
Rising Tensions on the Border
According to Espreso.tv: Ukraine is once again facing heightened concerns over Belarus potentially being drawn into the war against it. In a recent interview, Mykhailo Podolyak highlighted serious risks of conflict escalation, pointing to the redeployment of military units and the construction of camps on Belarusian soil. President Volodymyr Zelenskyy believes that Russia is attempting to use Belarus as a tool for its aggressive designs on Ukraine.
Currently, a military training ground is being built in Belarus’s Gomel region, a development that has alarmed Ukrainian military officials. On May 16, 2023, Robert 'Madiar' Brovdi issued a direct warning to Belarusian President Alexander Lukashenko about the consequences of any fresh assault originating from Belarus. He emphasized that in the event of aggression, 500 targets on Belarusian territory have already been identified.
Deepening Belarus-Russia Military Ties
Belarus is also conducting joint military exercises with Russia, signaling a strengthening of defense cooperation between the two countries. Mykhailo Podolyak stated that
“if drones and missiles are once again launched from there, we will consider that territory to be actively participating in hostilities, with all the ensuing consequences”- Mykhailo Podolyak.
He added that
“when you have a country that is categorically against war, you should think twice before making any statements or offering your territory as a launchpad for an attack”- Mykhailo Podolyak.
As a result, the situation along the Belarus-Ukraine border remains tense, and recent developments point to the potential for further escalation of the conflict.
Given the shifts in military activity in the region, Ukrainian military and political leaders are stressing the need for readiness against possible threats. Joint Belarus-Russia military drills, along with the construction of new military facilities in border areas, may indicate Russia’s intent to intensify its actions against Ukraine. This underscores the importance of continued international support for Ukraine in safeguarding its territorial integrity and security.
