Prisoner Exchange Talks: Ukraine’s Ombudsman Meets Russian Counterpart Over Missing Persons.
Diplomatic Engagement Amid POW Swap
According to Novyny.live: During a recent exchange of prisoners of war, Ukraine’s parliamentary commissioner for human rights, Dmytro Lubinets, held a meeting with Russia’s human rights ombudswoman, Yana Lantratova. The primary focus of their discussion was the status of both Ukrainian and Russian military captives, as well as individuals who have gone missing.
On June 26, Ukraine and Russia conducted another prisoner swap, resulting in the return of 160 Ukrainian defenders from Russian captivity. Most of these soldiers had been held since 2022. Lubinets emphasized that achieving tangible outcomes remains his top priority—outcomes that can bring relief to those still detained, the missing, and their families.
Preparations for the Next Exchange
Andriy Yusov, a representative of Ukraine’s Defense Ministry’s Main Intelligence Directorate, confirmed that preparations for the next prisoner exchange are already underway. Ongoing discussions also cover several key points:
- continuing mutual visits to prisoners of war;
- exchanging extensive lists of military personnel classified as missing in action;
- submitting requests for copies of documents within the framework of civil-law relations.
These issues remain pressing and require sustained attention from both sides.
The meeting between Ukrainian and Russian representatives, set against the backdrop of a POW exchange, underscores the critical role of humanitarian concerns amid the ongoing war. Continued dialogue on prisoners and missing persons could be key to alleviating the suffering of families awaiting the return of their loved ones. It is vital that both parties maintain an open channel of communication to reach further agreements and resolve outstanding issues.
