Zelensky revealed details of peace negotiations: what is being discussed with the USA

According to ТСН: On Thursday, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky met with journalists, during which he detailed attempts to reach a peace agreement, personnel changes in government, and the possibility of elections in Ukraine.

Key points from the meeting:

On the new head of the Office of the President

Zelensky noted that he is considering candidates for the position of the new head of the Office of the President following the dismissal of Andriy Yermak, but this issue is not a priority. The president expressed surprise that this issue has become so urgent, as the main issues remain the end of the war and ensuring security.

“I am surprised that this issue has become one of the most pressing, because I believe that the most important are all issues related to ending the war and guaranteeing security.”

He also added that it is currently premature to discuss candidates until vacant positions in the Ministry of Energy and the Ministry of Justice are filled.

On changes in regional leadership

The president expects proposals for changes in regional administrations, although he has not yet received the relevant lists. He emphasized the importance of having a clear list of candidates for replacements.

“I needs to be shown a list of those with whom there are certain issues...”

Zelensky stressed that it will be difficult without heads of regional administrations, especially in frontline regions.

On elections in Ukraine

Volodymyr Zelensky commented on the US president's demand regarding holding elections in Ukraine, highlighting that it is important for the elections to be legitimate.

“If it is possible for partners to help us organize the election process safely and within an adequate timeframe, I will support it.”

The president noted that he has already reached out to members of parliament regarding the preparation of legislative initiatives to enable elections during martial law.

On the US deadline for a peace agreement

Zelensky also emphasized that the US is striving for a quick end to the war, but no specific deadlines have been set.

“There were no specific ultimate frameworks or dates…”

He added that, presumably, Trump wants to achieve a 'full understanding' regarding the peace agreement by Christmas.

On territorial issues in the peace plan

The president indicated that US proposals regarding Donetsk, which effectively reflect Russia's position, do not align with Ukraine's interests.

“What will prevent Russian troops from advancing further or entering this zone under the guise of civilians?”

Zelensky emphasized that the issue of territorial compromises requires broad public discussion.

On the Zaporizhzhia Nuclear Power Plant

Zelensky reported that the management of the Zaporizhzhia Nuclear Power Plant is under discussion, but a final decision has not yet been made. He noted that Russia wants to keep the plant under its control.

“The Russians want to keep the station for themselves. We are against this and have warned that in that case, it will not operate.”

According to him, the American side proposes a joint management format for the station.

On joining NATO

Zelensky confirmed that the US has no intention of supporting Ukraine's accession to NATO.

“The US does not want to see us in NATO. This is not someone's speculation.”

On the threat of negotiations being disrupted by Russia

Zelensky does not rule out that Russia might suddenly withdraw from negotiations. He emphasized that Russia does not demonstrate a genuine desire to achieve peace.

On Russian propaganda during negotiations

The president believes that Russian propaganda actions distort Western partners' perceptions of the reality at the front.

On the number of the Ukrainian Armed Forces after the war

Zelensky assured that the number of the Armed Forces of Ukraine in a possible peace agreement will correspond to the actual number of military personnel.

“Remember, in 2022, the [Russians] wanted limitations on the [number of the Armed Forces] to 40 or 50 thousand?”

On the status of the Russian language and the Moscow Patriarchate

The president promised that the status of the Russian language and the rights of the Ukrainian Orthodox Church of the Moscow Patriarchate will be determined according to international law.

“In our framework agreement project, those 20 points are all written in accordance with international law.”

When the war may end

Zelensky does not rule out the possibility of ending the war next year, but emphasized the importance of having a stockpile of weapons to ensure future security.

The president also noted that Ukraine needs support and armament programs totaling $15-16 billion for the next year.

The president's meeting touched upon key topics that remain relevant for Ukraine amid the ongoing conflict. Decisions on new personnel appointments, holding elections, and possible compromises with Russia remain important for shaping the strategic course of the state. Choosing the right paths in these matters will impact the further development of events in the country.
