Poland Closes Border with Belarus: 40,000 Soldiers on the Eastern Front.
According to The Sun: Poland has deployed 40,000 troops in the east of the country amid military exercises by Vladimir Putin in Belarus.
Barbed wire and metal barricades appeared at border points with Belarus as the authorities announced the closure of all checkpoints from midnight.

Zapad Exercises
The Zapad exercises, which mean “West” in Russian, are held every four years and are accompanied by military drills that Polish Prime Minister Donald Tusk characterized as “very aggressive” and “defensive.”
Polish Deputy Defense Minister Cezary Tomczyk noted: “Poland has been preparing for the Zapad-2025 exercises for many months.”
“The Polish army conducted exercises involving over 30,000 soldiers, as well as NATO troops, to respond adequately.”
The Zapad-2025 exercises have a “defensive” scenario.
In 2017, the drills included simulated scenarios in which Russia captured the Baltic states, struck Germany, and invaded neutral countries.
Russia claims it is conducting only defensive strategy; however, NATO warned that these exercises are “serious preparation for war.”
In 2021, the exercises led to the rearmament of Belarus, and this weaponry was used during Russia's invasion of Ukraine.
In a sign of solidarity, several NATO countries, including the UK, have sent reinforcements to Poland, including troops, artillery, and air defense systems.
The UK already has about 300 troops in Poland as part of a “regular air policing mission.” Defense Minister Jon Healey emphasized that “we will do everything possible” to strengthen this presence.
Reaction to Border Closure
The border closure has sparked outrage in Russia, where Putin stated it would cause “significant damage” to goods transit.
“I urge Tusk to consider the consequences of such destructive steps.”
This follows after 19 Russian drones violated Polish airspace, prompting Warsaw to shoot them down and activate NATO Article 4, signaling a threat of war.
This was the first direct interaction NATO had with Russian forces since the invasion of Ukraine in 2022, bringing Europe closer to the possibility of a full-scale war.
“Anyone who decides to attack Poland, its territory or airspace, will always face an adequate response,” Tusk warned.

Tusk stated: “19 Russian drones crossed the border during an attack on western Ukraine, bringing our country closer to conflict like never since World War II.”
Volodymyr Zelensky, commenting on the situation, emphasized that this is a test to check the reaction of NATO allies.
“A strong response is necessary and can only be achieved through joint efforts with all partners – Ukraine, Poland, and all Europeans,” he stressed.
These events highlight the escalating tensions in the region against the backdrop of the Zapad exercises and the activity of the Russian army. Poland, seeking to protect its borders, is strengthening its military presence and coordinating actions with NATO allies. The outcomes of this situation may affect security policy both in Poland and across the European continent. Read also
