Anti-Ukrainian Sentiment Intensifies in Poland: Deputy Prime Minister Issues Stern Rebuke to Politicians.
Rising Anti-Ukrainian Hostility in Poland
According to Espreso.tv: Poland's Deputy Prime Minister, Kosiniak-Kamysz, has condemned both the policies of the Law and Justice (PiS) party and recent acts of aggression against Ukrainians, as anti-Ukrainian sentiment escalates across the country. In response to recent events, Kosiniak-Kamysz urged a reckoning with the consequences of such behavior, asserting that critics of Poland's support for Ukraine have 'lost their minds.'
Recently, the PiS party, led by Przemysław Czarnek, called for suspending funding to Ukraine, sparking outrage among politicians and the public. On July 12, an incident in Bielsko-Biała saw a man verbally abusing Ukrainian teenagers, which directly prompted the minister's statement. Donald Trump described the incident as disgusting. Police detained the attacker who insulted Ukrainians, and in Poznań, two men were arrested for attempting to break into the office of a Ukrainian company.
Honoring Victims and Poland's Security
Kosiniak-Kamysz honored the victims of the Volhynia tragedy on July 11 and noted that 'PiS has done nothing to commemorate the victims.' He stressed that those who today casually argue against supporting Ukraine are harming not only Ukraine but, above all, the security of Poland itself and NATO. The Deputy Prime Minister also expressed concern over anti-Ukrainian sentiment, stating:
'I don't know if they even realize what they are doing these days, because they look as if they have completely lost their senses.' - Poland's Deputy Prime Minister Kosiniak-Kamysz
The situation in Poland continues to raise alarm, and the political response to anti-Ukrainian hostility could prove pivotal in shaping public opinion and the country's policy direction going forward. This escalation of anti-Ukrainian sentiment could lead to:
- further division within Polish society;
- an impact on Poland's relations with Ukraine and its regional allies.
At a time when European security remains under threat, support for Ukraine may be crucial for stability not only in Poland but across the entire continent.
