According to UATV: In June 2023, a record-breaking heatwave in Germany led to more than 5,000 fatalities. Individuals aged 75 and older were hit hardest, proving especially vulnerable to the extreme temperatures that marked the month. During the final week of June alone, the heat may have contributed to over 4,000 deaths, highlighting the severity of the crisis.

Western Europe experienced its hottest June on record. For context, Germany reported 8,400 heat-related deaths in 2018 and 6,900 in 2019, showing a troubling trend of worsening impacts from abnormal weather patterns in the region.

Heatwave Effects on Neighboring Countries

Beyond Germany, more than 4,700 additional heat-related deaths were recorded between June 20 and June 28, 2023, in France, Belgium, Spain, and the Netherlands. In France, over 800 schools and colleges suspended operations due to the extreme heat. These figures underscore the widespread reach of the heatwave, which affected not only Germany but also its neighbors.
