Over 75,000 Women Now Serve in Ukraine’s Armed Forces: 5,500 Deployed on the Front Lines.
How Ukraine’s Military Is Transforming Through Gender Equality
According to Novyny.live: Ukraine’s army has undergone major changes during the full-scale war, especially regarding gender equality. By early 2026, more than 75,000 women are serving in the Armed Forces of Ukraine (AFU), with 5,500 of them carrying out missions on the front line. This reflects women’s active combat involvement and their growing role within the military.
The number of female officers has also jumped significantly—rising fivefold from 4% to 21%. This increase shows that women now have greater opportunities for career advancement and professional development in the armed forces. Discussions on gender equality have become central as the military faces modern challenges.
“Women can pursue any profession or specialization available in the Third Army Corps.”
Anastasiia Rymar, AFU representative
Since Russia launched its full-scale invasion on February 24, 2022, Ukraine’s military has been actively adapting to new conditions, including addressing gender issues. A key part of this effort is military training for students, which helps bring young people into service and prepares them for combat missions.
Moving Toward Gender Equality
The AFU continues implementing changes that boost military effectiveness and ensure equal opportunities for all service members, regardless of gender. This progress signals a strong commitment to gender equality within Ukraine’s forces and an enhanced role for women in defending the country.
These shifts in the Ukrainian Armed Forces reflect broader social transformations happening across society. As more women join military service and take part in combat operations, Ukraine’s army is not only becoming more effective but also showing a readiness to adapt to modern demands. This could serve as a powerful example for other nations working toward greater inclusivity in their own militaries.
