Information Drive: 'Defending Ukraine Is Women's Work'

According to TSN.ua: A new information campaign in Ukraine, carrying the slogan 'Defending Ukraine Is Women's Work,' has sparked backlash on social media due to concerns it might signal the forced mobilization of women. However, the Ground Forces have dismissed these fears, stressing that women's participation in military service remains entirely voluntary.

The 'Defending Ukraine Is Women's Work' campaign has appeared in cities across Ukraine. Andriy Podik, head of the Ground Forces Communications Directorate, stated that

the posters seen in various Ukrainian cities are part of a recruitment and information drive for the unmanned systems branch of the defense forces. Joining the military is a voluntary choice for women.
He emphasized that there is no element of compulsion in this initiative.

Martial Law and Mobilization

Ukraine remains under martial law, which includes a general mobilization order for men aged 18 to 60. This mobilization has been extended for 90 days, running from February 3 to May 4, 2026. Notably, the maximum duration for detaining individuals for violating mobilization rules is three hours, with an extension of up to 72 hours allowed only in exceptional cases.

The campaign aims to showcase real women service members working in technology-focused units. As one unidentified author put it, 'we will feature real female soldiers in technological divisions. Every day, they do work that, until recently, was considered 'not for women.'' In this way, the initiative seeks to reshape the public image of women in the military and highlight their contributions to national defense.

This information drive is part of Ukraine's broader efforts to promote gender equality within the armed forces—a field long viewed as male-dominated. Against the backdrop of martial law and ongoing mobilization, the campaign underscores that women can also play a vital role in defending the state by serving in various military units. By presenting a positive portrayal of female service members, the initiative aims to challenge societal stereotypes and expand opportunities for women in defense roles.
