Rocket Attack on Kyiv: Russia Used Oreshnik and Left the City Without Heat

According to ТСН: The night attack on Ukraine proved to be not only a brutal act of terror against civilians but also an important geopolitical signal. Moscow succeeded in striking with the missile 'Oreshnik,' attempting to intimidate the West against the backdrop of progress in Ukraine's defensive agreements and growing sanctions pressure from the USA.

'Oreshnik': A Warning for NATO

Debris from the 'Oreshnik' missile was found in the Lviv region. This missile, capable of carrying a nuclear warhead, was launched from the Kapustin Yar testing ground. Russian 'war correspondents' claim that the target was an underground gas storage facility, while the Ukrainian side emphasizes the strike on civilian infrastructure.

'Such a strike near the EU and NATO borders poses a serious threat to security on the European continent and is a test for the transatlantic community,' noted Foreign Minister Andriy Sibiga during an urgent meeting of the Ukraine-NATO Council.

Analysts believe that the use of 'Oreshnik' is an element of psychological warfare, an attempt to shake the nerves of Ukrainians and their Western partners.

Kyiv: Cold and Victims

January 9 was tragic for the capital of Ukraine. As a result of the attack, at least four people died, including an emergency medical worker. In addition, 25 individuals were injured.

Mayor Vitaliy Klitschko highlighted the critical situation with heating:

'About half of the apartment buildings in snowy Kyiv — nearly 6000 — were left without heat amid daytime temperatures of around -8 degrees Celsius.'

The building of the Qatari embassy, which plays a vital role in hostage exchange talks, was also affected. President Zelensky called on the world for a decisive response.

Global Reaction: Security Council and the Pope

The international community condemned Moscow's actions as an escalation of violence.

  • UN: The Security Council plans to hold a meeting regarding Ukraine.

  • EU: The head of European diplomacy, Josep Borrell, noted that 'Putin's response to diplomacy is more missiles and destruction.'

  • Vatican: The Pope called for an immediate ceasefire and dialogue, emphasizing the need to stop the suffering in Ukraine.

Pretext for Attack

Moscow shamelessly referred to the bombardment as 'revenge' for the alleged attack by Ukrainian drones on Putin's residence last month. This version was firmly rejected both in Ukraine and by the US president.

Furthermore, the attack occurred against the backdrop of new cooling relations between Russia and the USA, after the US Navy seized a tanker of Russia's 'shadow fleet' in the Caribbean, continuing the maritime blockade of Venezuela and intercepting vessels attempting to circumvent sanctions to export oil.

This attack on Ukraine further highlights the tension in relations between Moscow and the West and indicates the threats that may arise from further escalation of the conflict. The international community is responding vigorously to the events unfolding, as security in Europe remains under serious threat.
