Lviv's June 29 Storm: Widespread Damage and Power Outages

According to Novyny.live: A powerful storm swept through Lviv on June 29, causing fallen trees, damaged rooftops, and widespread blackouts. The city was hit by heavy rain, strong wind gusts, and thunderstorms, leading to serious disruptions in infrastructure.

Fallen trees were reported on Kopernyka and Yefremova Streets, with one tree near Franka Park crashing onto a trolleybus. Damage to the overhead contact network occurred near St. George's Cathedral and on the following streets:

• Solomiya Krushelnytska Street
• Chornovola — Lypynskoho Street
• Stepan Bandera — Kopernyka Street
• at the 'Soborna' stop on Ivan Franko Street

A traffic light at the Varshavska — Tunnelna intersection also fell, further complicating vehicle movement.

Strong winds tore off part of the roof of the Shevchenkivskyi District Administration building. More than 20 large trees fell across the city, forcing employees of the Shevchenkivskyi District Administration to take shelter during the storm. Tram routes No. 1, 2, 3, 4, 8, and 9 were temporarily suspended.

Importantly, no injuries were reported during the storm. Lviv Mayor Andriy Sadovyi confirmed that power was also temporarily cut on Lypynskoho Street. Deputy Mayor Andriy Moskalenko noted that

“we are now analyzing each flooding incident”

“the priority right now is to clear the fallen trees”

The storm stood in stark contrast to the previous day—June 28, when Lviv recorded a temperature record of +35.8°C, a high not seen since 1963. Forecasts indicate that on June 30, Lviv will experience scheduled power outages from 4:00 PM to 10:00 PM as a result of the storm's aftermath.

This natural disaster highlights the vulnerability of the city's infrastructure to extreme weather events, which have become increasingly frequent in recent years. Lviv authorities are already working to address the damage, but this event also underscores the need to strengthen urban infrastructure and improve preparedness for future occurrences.
