Devastating Earthquakes Strike Venezuela: Thousands Feared Dead, State of Emergency Declared.
What We Know About the Venezuela Earthquakes
According to Novyny.live: On June 24, 2026, two major earthquakes hit Venezuela’s northern coast, causing widespread destruction and likely mass casualties. The tremors occurred near San Felipe, the capital of Yaracuy state. The first quake, with a magnitude of 7.2, was recorded at 18:04, followed just 40 seconds later by a second tremor measuring 7.5 magnitude. This second earthquake struck 23 kilometers southeast of the town of Yumare.
The shaking was felt not only across multiple Venezuelan states but also in neighboring Colombia. In Caracas, the nation’s capital, at least three buildings partially collapsed. According to the United States Geological Survey, the death toll could exceed tens of thousands. In response, the Venezuelan government has declared a state of emergency, underscoring the severity of the disaster.
Maiquetía Airport has been shut down due to damage, hampering rescue operations and the evacuation of survivors. The USGS stated:
“High casualties and extensive damage are likely, and the disaster is probably widespread.” – United States Geological Survey
The situation remains critical as emergency crews work to assess the full scale of the destruction and deliver aid to those affected.
The Earthquake’s Impact on the Country
Earthquakes of this magnitude typically inflict severe damage on infrastructure and populations, especially in nations with limited emergency response resources. Venezuela’s already fragile situation—worsened by years of political and economic turmoil—will likely complicate recovery and relief efforts. International response and readiness to assist are now crucial, as the scale of the catastrophe demands a massive coordinated effort for rebuilding.
