China makes an impressive entry into the European electric vehicle market, overtaking Tesla
Chinese company BYD Co. has for the first time surpassed American giant Tesla Inc. in the number of electric vehicles sold in Europe. According to research firm Jato Dynamics, in April, BYD registered 7231 new electric vehicles, which is 169% more than in the same period last year. While Tesla lost its leadership, decreasing its registrations by 49%.
'This is a turning point for the European automotive market,' said Jato Dynamics analyst Felipe Munoz.
BYD's success has been made possible by the sales of plug-in hybrids, which suddenly increased by 359% compared to the previous year. The European electric transport market is accelerating its development, increasing registrations by 28% overall, while sales leader Volkswagen sold 61% more electric cars.
