According to ТСН: In Iran, access to the internet has been completely halted amid mass anti-government protests triggered by a sharp decline in the economic situation. Demonstrations have spread across all areas of the country.

According to the monitoring organization NetBlocks, the internet connection was disabled throughout the territory of Iran. Interruptions had previously been observed in the western regions, particularly in the city of Kermanshah.

What is known about the situation in Iran

Protests in Iran began in late December due to the economic crisis and the collapse of the national currency. Activists report that protests have spread to over 270 settlements in 27 out of 31 provinces of Iran.

One of the main protest arenas has been the Grand Bazaar in Tehran. Witnesses report that security forces used tear gas to disperse demonstrators when merchants closed their shops en masse.

According to the Norwegian human rights organization Iran Human Rights, since the protests began in late December, security forces have killed at least 45 people, including eight children. Hundreds have been injured, and more than 2,000 have been detained. Iranian authorities acknowledge the death of at least 21 individuals, including members of the security forces.

Iranian President Masoud Pezeshkian has urged security forces to exercise restraint and emphasized the necessity of dialogue with society, but protests continue to escalate.

At the same time, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Ukraine has urged citizens to leave the country urgently due to the protests.

The protests in Iran highlight the escalating social tension in the country, caused by economic difficulties. The shutdown of the internet demonstrates the government's efforts to control the information space during these disturbances. The unpredictable consequences of the protests could affect the stability of the situation within the country and Iran's relations with other states, particularly at the international level.
