Russia could not protect Maduro: ISW explains the Kremlin's restrained reaction.
According to ТСН: Representatives of Russia continue to discuss the US military operation in Venezuela, but the reactions of key figures in the Kremlin remain rather restrained. Overall, the answers from the Russian government sound standard, without new messages.
This situation was recorded in the report of the Institute for the Study of War (ISW).
Discussion and Joint Statement
Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov and Belarusian Foreign Minister Mikhail Ryshenkov discussed the actions of the USA during a phone call. They released a joint statement condemning the American operation and urging the USA to bring Venezuelan President Nicolás Maduro and his wife back to their country.
Reaction from Dmitry Medvedev
The Chairman of the Security Council of Russia, Dmitry Medvedev, sharply commented on Washington's actions, accusing US President Donald Trump of violating international law and expressing support for Maduro. He also used the issue of the arrest of the Venezuelan leader to issue threats against German Chancellor Friedrich Merz and Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky.
Criticism from Deputies
Members of the State Duma of the Russian Federation also criticized the USA, stating that Washington allegedly ignores the sovereignty of countries in the Western Hemisphere and attempts to gain control over Venezuela's oil resources.
"Overall, the Kremlin's response to the American operation in Venezuela currently has a formal and stereotypical character. Analysts from ISW believe that the Russian government must balance between maintaining its own reputation as a reliable partner to other states and continuing efforts to please the Trump administration."
US Special Forces Operation
We remind that on January 3, the US special unit 'Delta' arrested Maduro and his wife Cilia Flores in their residence in Caracas as part of a large-scale operation. Trump reported that the leaders were evacuated from the country aboard the USS Iwo Jima aircraft carrier to be transported to New York, where Maduro will be tried for drug terrorism. The operation, which included airstrikes on military targets, led to the fall of the regime, and control of the country was transferred to Vice President Delsy Rodriguez.
Comment from Igor Girkin
The Russian terrorist Igor Girkin remarked that the arrest of Maduro by the US special forces represents a severe blow to the image of the Russian Federation, which failed to protect its ally. He also emphasized that Moscow is "sunk in the bloody mud of Ukraine" and has lost the ability to influence events on the other continent, while Washington has gained control over Venezuelan oil and Trump holds cards against China.
The US operation in Venezuela testified not only to military but also political activity of Washington on the global stage. The Kremlin's response, although restrained, indicates the seriousness of the situation, as Russia has traditionally been an important ally of Venezuela. These events may have serious consequences for future relations between these countries and the overall balance of power in the region.
