Merz stated about Ukraine's chance for a ceasefire: what the peace agreement entails

German Chancellor Friedrich Merz expressed a statement about the need for a ceasefire in Ukraine and the conclusion of a peace agreement with Russia. According to him, Russia has the opportunity to reach an agreement on ending hostilities after a prolonged conflict with Ukraine.

Merz's statement about the ceasefire

“Three and a half years after the illegal attack on Ukraine, Russia now has the opportunity to agree on a ceasefire and hostilities,” the chancellor stated.

Merz emphasized that European allies expect a constructive response from Vladimir Putin to the proposal from US President Donald Trump. He called for the start of negotiations without preconditions and expressed support for a summit involving Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky.

“There must be an agreement on a ceasefire. Ukraine needs strong security guarantees. Territorial issues can only be resolved with the agreement of Ukrainians. We conveyed these messages to President Trump with clarity and unity before his trip to Anchorage. I am in contact with him regarding this matter. President Trump can now take an important step towards peace”
Merz emphasized.

Earlier, Donald Trump expressed the condition under which Vladimir Putin could seize all of Ukraine’s territory. Media reports suggest possible agreed arrangements between the leaders of Russia and the US, however, analysts warn against the potential exploitation of such an agreement by the Kremlin to strengthen its positions.

Chancellor Merz hopes for a swift start to negotiations and the conclusion of a peace agreement that will ensure security for Europe and Ukraine.
