Water Supply Systems Under Threat of Attack in Ukraine

According to Novyny.live: Water expert Mykhailo Khorev has warned that the Russian Federation poses a direct threat to Ukraine's water supply facilities. He stated that such attacks could force authorities to implement scheduled water shut-offs. Khorev pointed to the recent shelling of the Karachunivske Reservoir dam in Kryvyi Rih, where the destruction of sluice gates has already created severe water supply issues. Targeting civilian water infrastructure is widely considered a war crime under international law.

The expert emphasized that the risk to water channels is not new.

“This risk didn't appear yesterday or the day before, because we already have examples of strikes. For instance, the attack on the Karachunivske Reservoir dam in Kryvyi Rih. They destroyed the sluice gates there, which caused a major problem. Accordingly, water channels could also be hit,” noted Mykhailo Khorev.

Threats Intensify Amid Broader Infrastructure Assaults

These warnings have gained urgency against a backdrop of relentless attacks on Ukraine's critical infrastructure. On March 3, Russian forces targeted energy facilities in several regions, causing power outages in four oblasts. Throughout March, occupiers launched 18 separate strikes against the Ukrainian railway system, damaging 41 separate objects, highlighting a systematic campaign against vital national infrastructure.

Given these conditions, the introduction of water rationing schedules could become a reality unless the situation improves. Monitoring developments in the water supply sector is now crucial to prevent a potential humanitarian crisis in Ukraine.

The threat to water supply objects reflects a broader Russian strategy aimed at destabilizing Ukraine by crippling its essential services. With active hostilities continuing, protecting water resources and ensuring an uninterrupted supply is critical, as it directly impacts civilian life and economic function. Constant monitoring and preparedness for crisis scenarios have become an integral part of resource management during wartime.
