Trump's Role: Sikorski Reveals Unexpected Reason for Orban's Veto Withdrawal on Sanctions.
Poland's Foreign Minister Radek Sikorski stated that Hungary's change of position regarding the extension of sanctions against Russia may be related to the influence of U.S. President Donald Trump. He made this statement following a meeting of foreign ministers of EU member states in Brussels.
I think President Trump helped here
The main reason for Hungary's withdrawal of the veto was Trump's unequivocal statement, in which he labeled Putin as an aggressor and threatened sanctions against Russia if it refused peace talks.
Trump announced the possibility of imposing taxes, tariffs, and sanctions against Russia if an agreement on ending the war in Ukraine is not reached. This statement coincided with the moment when Hungary lifted its objections to the continuation of EU economic restrictions against Russia.
Poland's Prime Minister Donald Tusk supported Hungary's blockade on sanctions. His words indicate support from the U.S. in the fight against Putin.
Sikorski also commented on the situation from a Polish perspective, pointing out that the principle of unanimity does not always align with national interests. He stated that unanimity and vetoes can hinder decision-making that serves Polish interests, especially when it comes to sanctions against bad actors and hostile countries.
