Drone Strike on Kharkiv Injures 15, Including a 12-Year-Old Child.
Kharkiv Targeted in January 24, 2023 Attack
According to Novyny.live: On January 24, 2023, Russian Federation forces launched an assault on the city of Kharkiv using attack drones. The strike, which hit the Industrial and Nemyshlyanskyi districts, resulted in injuries to 15 civilians, among them a 12-year-old boy. This attack is part of a wider pattern of strikes on Ukrainian cities that has intensified since Russia's full-scale invasion began in February 2022.
The bombardment damaged several apartment blocks and private homes, a student dormitory, and two medical facilities, igniting fires at the impact sites. Kharkiv regional police reported that by 06:00, 15 people were known to have sustained various injuries; the child victim was suffering from acute stress reaction.
Scale and Aftermath of the Assault
The assault involved a massive barrage, with Russian forces firing over 370 attack drones and 21 missiles. In addition to Kharkiv, targets included Kyiv, as well as the Sumy and Chernihiv regions. In response to these events, Ukrainian investigative authorities have initiated pre-trial inquiries under Article 438 of the country's Criminal Code, which deals with violations of the laws and customs of war.
This incident underscores the severe humanitarian toll on civilians from the ongoing conflict in Ukraine, which has seen fighting in the east since 2014. The significant casualties and destruction highlight the precarious security situation for the population and demonstrate Ukraine's legal efforts to pursue accountability for alleged war crimes.
