Institute of Biochemistry in Kyiv Targeted by Attack

According to Novyny.live: On July 2, 2023, a Russian missile attack on Kyiv caused severe damage to the O.V. Palladin Institute of Biochemistry, part of the National Academy of Sciences of Ukraine. The strike completely destroyed several laboratories, tore off parts of the roof, and shattered windows and doors throughout the facility. Costly reagents and advanced scientific equipment were lost, severely hampering the institute's future research efforts.

The assault claimed 30 lives, with more than 50 injured individuals currently hospitalized. Kyiv Mayor Vitali Klitschko reported that 56 wounded people remain under medical care. Doctors have managed to stabilize the condition of a one-year-old boy, along with his sister, parents, and grandmother, all of whom were hurt in the shelling. Additionally, eight people are still listed as missing.

Aftermath of the Attack

Experts are still assessing the full extent of the damage from this Russian strike. Founded in 1925, the O.V. Palladin Institute of Biochemistry has long been a cornerstone of Ukrainian science, and its destruction deals a heavy blow to biochemical research in the country.

This attack underscores the devastating impact of the war on civilian infrastructure and academic activity in Ukraine. The loss of such a critical institution will hinder progress in biochemical studies, with potential long-term consequences for both science and medicine nationwide. At the same time, the deaths and injuries resulting from the shelling highlight the ongoing humanitarian crisis gripping the nation amid the armed conflict.
