Massive Drone Assault on Ukraine: March 4-5
According to Novyny.live: In a sustained assault beginning at 6:30 PM on March 4th and lasting into the morning of March 5th, Russia launched a major drone attack against Ukraine. Ukrainian air defense forces successfully intercepted and neutralized 136 hostile unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs) during this operation.
Attack Details
Russia deployed a total of 155 attack drones, including approximately 100 Iranian-designed Shahed models, as well as 'Gerbera' and 'Italmas' types. The drones were launched from multiple locations within Russia and occupied Crimea, including:
- Bryansk
- Kursk
- Millerovo
- Primorsko-Akhtarsk
- Gvardeyskoye
- Chauda in Crimea
By 8:00 AM on March 5th, Ukrainian air defenses had shot down or electronically jammed 136 of the attacking drones. Despite this high interception rate, 18 drones managed to strike targets across eight locations, with debris from downed UAVs landing in three additional areas. This large-scale attack underscores the ongoing intensity of the conflict and Russia's increasing reliance on drone warfare. The use of massed drone swarms has become a defining feature of this conflict, testing air defenses and civilian resilience.
This incident represents a significant escalation in drone warfare tactics by Russia. While Ukraine's air defense demonstrated a high success rate, the sheer scale of the attack highlights the persistent threat and the critical need for enhanced defensive capabilities. The event also signals that Russian forces are continuing to adapt their strategies, employing newer technologies to pursue military objectives in the war.
