Ukrainian Air Defense Downs 55 of 83 Russian Drones in Major Attack.
Major Drone Assault on Ukraine, February 15, 2023
According to UATV: On February 15, 2023, Russian forces launched a large-scale drone attack against Ukraine, deploying 83 unmanned aerial vehicles of various types, including 'Shahed', 'Gerbera', 'Italmas', and others. Ukrainian air defense forces successfully intercepted and neutralized 55 of the hostile drones. Despite this defensive effort, 25 strike-capable drones hit their targets across 12 different locations, resulting in significant damage. This assault is part of a sustained Russian campaign targeting Ukrainian energy and civilian infrastructure, which has intensified during the winter months.
The Command of the Air Forces of the Armed Forces of Ukraine reported:
According to preliminary data, as of 08:00, air defense has shot down/suppressed 55 enemy UAVs of the Shahed, 'Gerbera', 'Italmas' types and drones of other types.
Furthermore, falling debris from the intercepted drones was recorded at three additional sites.
Civilian Impact of the Attack
Separately, a Russian attack on Odesa on February 14 resulted in one civilian fatality. These events underscore the ongoing peril faced by civilians and the severe challenges Ukraine confronts amid continued military aggression. The persistent threat from Iranian-made Shahed drones and other loitering munitions requires constant vigilance and advanced air defense systems.
This latest attack highlights the continuation of active Russian military operations, which endanger Ukrainian civilians and critical infrastructure. While the Ukrainian air defense's success in destroying a significant number of drones demonstrates their improving capabilities against evolving threats, the resulting casualties and destruction emphasize the gravity of the situation and the ongoing need for sustained international support.
