Military Analysts Assess Russia's Preparations for a New Offensive in Southern Ukraine.
The Situation in Southern Ukraine
According to TSN.ua: Western media reports and Ukrainian military experts warn that Russia is likely preparing for a new offensive operation in southern Ukraine. Key areas of concern include the regions around Pokrovsk, Huliaipole, and territories west of Zaporizhzhia. Russian forces are reportedly building up strength on several fronts, including the Sloviansk direction, where one assault was recently conducted towards Ozerne. This potential spring offensive poses a significant challenge to Ukraine's defensive lines, which have been under sustained pressure.
Analysts identify several key objectives for the anticipated Russian push:
- Capturing Kostiantynivka
- Capturing Pokrovsk
- Capturing Myrnohrad
Intelligence regarding Russian plans for the spring has been circulating since December and January, although the pace of their offensive actions slowed by half in January. However, fierce fighting continues in the Pokrovsk area of Donetsk Oblast, indicating a sharp rise in regional tensions.
Andriy Kovalenko: 'Western press is somewhat behind. The enemy's plans are known and understood.'
Vladyslav Selezniov believes that 'the enemy is already preparing to scale up offensive actions closer to April.' Oleg Zhdanov notes that 'the threat to Zaporizhzhia exists. But it is theoretical. The question is the resilience of our defense.'
Threats to Ukrainian Regions
Amid these developments, other regions including Dnipropetrovsk, Kharkiv, Sumy, and Chernihiv oblasts also remain under threat. The frontline situation remains highly tense, demanding close attention from Ukrainian military command and analysts. The strategic importance of these potentially vulnerable areas necessitates concentrated resources and careful planning by Ukrainian forces to mount an effective defense.
The overall situation on the Ukrainian front remains critical, as the activation of Russian troops may signal preparations for new large-scale assaults. Should these threats materialize, Ukraine must be prepared for rapid and decisive action to protect its sovereign territory.
