Deadliest Month for Ukrainian Civilians Since 2022: Over 2,000 Killed in May.
May 2023: A Grim Milestone in Ukraine's Civilian Casualties
According to Espreso.tv: May 2023 saw the highest number of civilian deaths in Ukraine since April 2022, with more than 2,000 people killed. The UN Human Rights Monitoring Mission attributed this surge primarily to Russian attacks involving heavy weaponry. Among the victims, 64 were killed by short-range drones—a record high for such strikes.
“The total number of civilian casualties in May exceeded 2,000, making it the deadliest month for civilians since April 2022,” reported Daniel Bell.
Key tragic incidents in May included:
- On May 5, an aerial bombing in Zaporizhzhia killed 12 civilians and wounded 42.
- A missile struck a residential apartment building in Kyiv on May 14, killing 24 people and injuring seven.
- In Kherson, 14 people were killed and 221 wounded.
- 22 civilians died in an attack on an educational complex in occupied Starobilsk on the night of May 21–22.
According to Russian authorities, May 2023 also saw 47 deaths and 298 injuries on Russian soil.
“The harm to civilians we documented was not limited to communities near the front line,” Bell emphasized.
The use of short-range drones caused unprecedented casualties: 64 killed and 539 wounded. These figures underscore the severe humanitarian toll of the ongoing conflict in Ukraine.
Humanitarian Fallout of the Conflict
The sharp rise in civilian deaths during May 2023 highlights an escalation in hostilities and their devastating impact on non-combatants. Heavy casualties from aerial attacks and drone warfare indicate that military operations are intensifying, affecting not only front-line areas but also cities deeper within the country. These events raise urgent concerns about the humanitarian crisis in Ukraine and the need for a stronger international response to the conflict's consequences.
