Russia Aims to Expand Its Drone Corps to 165,000 Personnel.
Russia's Drone Force Expansion Plan
According to TSN.ua: Russia intends to significantly increase the size of its drone warfare units to 165,000 personnel. This expansion includes plans to recruit an additional 79,000 individuals specifically for unmanned aerial system (UAS) units. The Commander-in-Chief of the Armed Forces of Ukraine, Oleksandr Syrskyi, has publicly detailed these plans, highlighting the seriousness of Russia's military objectives. This massive build-up underscores a strategic shift in modern warfare, where drone swarms are becoming a central component of battlefield tactics.
Testing of New Drone Models
As part of this initiative, Russia continues to field new drones, including interceptor models. Furthermore, the jet-powered 'Geran-4' and 'Geran-5' unmanned aerial vehicles are currently undergoing testing. These new platforms could substantially enhance the tactical capabilities of Russian forces on the front lines.
In the early hours of February 7, Russian forces launched an attack on Ukrainian critical infrastructure. However, Ukrainian air defense successfully intercepted 406 aerial targets, which included 24 missiles and 382 drones. This incident demonstrates the persistent threat in Ukrainian airspace and emphasizes the critical need for robust defensive measures.

Consequently, Russia's plans to grow its drone corps are a cause for concern and demand close attention from Ukraine and its international allies. Given the frequency of Russian attacks, Ukrainian military forces and their partners must enhance security protocols and develop new counter-drone tactics. Potential measures include:
- Upgrading air defense systems
- Actively collaborating with specialists in unmanned aerial vehicle technology
This technological arms race in drone warfare is a defining feature of the ongoing conflict, requiring constant adaptation from defenders.
