Russia became the largest supplier of buckwheat to the USA: how it happened.
According to ТСН: From January to October 2025, Russia ranked first among suppliers of buckwheat to the USA, surpassing Canada, which had long been the leader. According to American statistics, the volume of Russian exports amounted to $1.8 million, while Canadian exports were $1.6 million.
This information was reported by UkrAgroConsult. It is noted that this is the highest figure for Russia since 2022, when the export amounted to $3.3 million. Although the figures are not significant in the context of global trade, Russian propaganda is already using this data to demonstrate the supposed ineffectiveness of sanctions.
Reasons for Success
Experts explain this 'success' not by demand, but by nuances of American legislation. Due to the customs policy introduced by Donald Trump, which complicated agricultural imports for many countries, Russia was able to take advantage of the situation, continuing to supply non-sanctioned goods without additional duties.
Volumes of Supplies from Other Countries
For comparison, the volumes of buckwheat exports from other countries are as follows:
Ukraine – $155.3 thousand;
China – $121.7 thousand;
Lithuania – $119.7 thousand.
It is important to note that Trump recently called for cooperation with Russia and China in business with the United States. It was also previously noted that his inner circle is actively discussing business opportunities with Russia in the event of the war against Ukraine ending.
Importantly, the situation with buckwheat supplies demonstrates not only economic aspects but also political ones. The use of Russian information about exports emphasizes how domestic legislative decisions in individual countries can influence the global arena. Russia is trying to strengthen its positions in foreign markets despite the sanctions that remain in effect.
