Russia Warns EU of Consequences Over Seizing 'Shadow Fleet' Tankers.
Russia's Warning on the 'Shadow Fleet'
According to TSN.ua: Russia has issued a warning to the European Union regarding the potential consequences of any attempts to seize vessels from its so-called 'shadow fleet'. Deputy Foreign Minister Sergei Ryabkov stated that Russia possesses significant experience in safeguarding freedom of navigation. This warning comes as European nations, alongside the United Kingdom, are actively debating the possibility of forcibly impounding tankers that use false flags to circumvent sanctions on Russian oil.
Ryabkov emphasized the importance of avoiding such 'experiments', warning that interference by 'ill-wishers' could lead to negative outcomes.
“Experiments by ill-wishers could end badly for them,” said Sergei Ryabkov. He also noted that 'the number of countries in the European Union is not, in itself, a trump card.'
International Coordination and Response
The United Kingdom is considering confiscating Russia-linked tankers in response to Moscow's actions in international waters, as part of a broader Western strategy to protect its interests. Notably, the United States, with UK involvement, has already seized the tanker Marinera for transporting Russian oil.
Separately, Ukraine has imposed sanctions on 91 vessels from Russia's shadow fleet, highlighting growing international coordination to counter Russian influence on global markets. Dozens of these shadow fleet vessels have been observed in the English Channel and the Baltic Sea, raising concerns among Western nations.
Thus, the situation surrounding Russia's shadow fleet is emerging as a new pressure point against Moscow. The international community, including the EU and its allies, continues to explore ways to respond to these challenges. This development underscores heightened coordination in efforts to combat Russia's attempts to bypass sanctions and maintain its economic reach. The involvement of the UK and US in vessel seizures, along with Ukraine's actions, represent significant steps in the Western response to Russian aggression. The issue of maritime control is likely to remain a key focus in the context of international relations and regional security.
