Russia Turns to Expensive Missile Systems to Counter Drones

According to UATV: On June 28, Ukrainian Army General Mykola Malomuzh stated on the FREEДОМ TV channel that Russia is deploying costly missile systems—including the Pantsir, S-300, and S-400—to intercept Ukrainian drones. This approach highlights a critical shortage of specialized anti-drone air defense systems within the Russian military. According to Malomuzh, the number of drones targeting Russia could reach hundreds of thousands annually.

Mounting Challenges for Russian Forces

The general emphasized that Russia is struggling to scale its air defense systems fast enough to keep up with the drone threat.

This underscores the difficulties Russian troops face in countering unmanned aerial vehicles.

Malomuzh also noted that Ukrainian forces are actively destroying these same Russian systems.

“Moreover, we are destroying these Pantsirs, S-300s, S-400s, and S-500s” – Mykola Malomuzh

In modern warfare, drones have become increasingly pivotal, with their numbers in attacks reaching dozens or even hundreds per month. “Hundreds, thousands of drones are flying—if you count per month, it’s dozens of hundreds,” the general remarked.

This situation underscores the strategic advantage drones offer in contemporary conflicts, as their use can significantly alter the course of battle. Given the challenges facing Russian forces, Ukraine has an opportunity to strengthen its position by continuing to advance its drone and air defense technologies. Such progress could shift the regional balance of power and provide Ukraine with additional tools to defend its territory.
