Over 60 Missiles Strike Kremenchuk Refinery; Ukraine’s Power Grid Loses 27 GW.
Attacks on the Kremenchuk Oil Refinery
According to Novyny.live: Russian forces continue to target Ukraine’s energy infrastructure, launching missiles and drones at the Kremenchuk oil refinery in particular. Energy Minister Denys Shmyhal has reported severe damage to the sector, along with partial restoration of some capacity. Specifically, more than 60 missiles and 260 drones were fired at the Kremenchuk facility. According to the minister, over the past year and this winter, Russia has used more than 700 missiles and 20,000 drones in total.
Strikes on Ukraine’s Power System
As a result of these attacks, blackouts have affected consumers in the Vinnytsia, Zhytomyr, Zaporizhzhia, Mykolaiv, Khmelnytskyi, Poltava, and Kharkiv regions. Since the start of the war, Ukraine has lost 27 GW of electricity generation capacity, including 15.5 GW due to the occupation of power facilities. The overall losses to the country’s energy sector amount to $24.8 billion.
Denys Shmyhal: 'The Russians are trying to destroy Ukrainian energy, including our oil refining, with thousands of missiles and drones.'
He also stated that 'we have already restored 3.5 of the lost nine gigawatts.'
These developments highlight the serious challenges Ukraine’s energy sector faces amid the ongoing war. The relentless bombardment of power facilities threatens the stability of electricity supply across regions and complicates efforts to rebuild energy infrastructure. With the conflict continuing, protecting critical infrastructure has become essential for ensuring the country’s energy security.
