Ukraine Reports Intercepting 342 Targets in Major Russian Air Assault.
Russia's Air Assault on Ukraine, January 20, 2023
According to UATV: On January 20, 2023, Russia launched a large-scale aerial attack against Ukraine, employing a diverse arsenal of missiles and drones. This assault represents one of the most intense barrages since the full-scale invasion began nearly a year prior. The weaponry used in the attack included:
- One 'Zircon' anti-ship missile
- 18 ballistic missiles, including 'Iskander-M' and S-300 types
- 15 Kh-101 cruise missiles
- 339 attack drones, 250 of which were identified as 'Shahed' models
The Kyiv region was identified as the primary focus of the strike.
Preliminary data indicates that, as of 10:00 AM, Ukrainian air defenses successfully intercepted or jammed 342 incoming targets. Despite this high interception rate, five missiles and 24 attack drones struck 11 different locations. Earlier reports had detailed strikes on an industrial facility in the Poltava region, along with attacks targeting the Kyiv, Dnipropetrovsk, Odesa, and Vinnytsia regions.
Launch Sites for the Attack
The missiles and drones were launched from multiple regions, including:
- Kursk
- Oryol
- Millerovo
- Primorsko-Akhtarsk
- Shatalovo
- Bryansk
- Gvardeyskoye
- Chauda
- Temporarily occupied Donetsk
According to information from the Air Force of the Armed Forces of Ukraine, 'preliminary data, as of 10:00, indicates that air defense forces shot down/suppressed 342 targets.'
This coordinated attack underscores the continued intensity of the conflict and Russia's ongoing military activity. The use of such a wide array of weaponry, including a significant number of drones, points to a strategy of overwhelming Ukrainian defenses. While the active performance of Ukraine's air defense systems demonstrates a capacity to counter the aggression, the successful strikes that did get through highlight the persistent risks to civilian infrastructure and population centers.
