Russia's New Missile Strategy: Why Ukrainian Cities Are Plunged Into Darkness

A Shift in Russia's Missile Assaults

According to TSN.ua: Russia has altered its missile attack strategy, now deploying a higher proportion of ballistic missiles while reducing its reliance on cruise missiles. This tactical pivot has resulted in severe disruptions to Ukraine's power grid. During large-scale nocturnal assaults, Russia launches between 200 and 500 drones and other targeted munitions, alongside approximately 20 to 40 missiles. The increased use of ballistic weapons, which can strike their targets in mere minutes, presents a formidable challenge to Ukrainian air defenses.

Impact on Ukraine's Critical Infrastructure

These sustained attacks have inflicted serious damage on the infrastructure of major cities, including Kyiv, leading to widespread interruptions in electricity, heating, and water supply. To bolster its defenses, Ukraine has received advanced air defense systems such as Patriot, Hawk, NASAMS, Iris-T, and SAMP/T. However, Kyiv continues to request additional systems like THAAD and Aegis to counter the evolving threat posed by Russia's new tactics.

Notable incidents include missile strikes, specifically using 'Oreshnik' rockets, which hit Dnipro in November 2024 and Lviv in January 2026. These events underscore the urgent need for Ukraine to continuously enhance its defensive capabilities against Russia's adaptable and relentless campaign. The conflict has increasingly become a war of attrition targeting the civilian energy grid, especially during winter months.

Russia's tactical shift demonstrates an adaptation to Ukraine's defensive measures and a concerted effort to cripple the nation's energy infrastructure.

The employment of harder-to-intercept ballistic missiles places immense strain on Ukraine's air defense network. In response to these escalating threats, the international community's ongoing provision of military aid remains a critical factor in sustaining Ukraine's ability to defend itself.
