British and French Navies Intercept Russian Oil Tankers: Key Details on the Operation.
Western Nations Step Up Actions Against the 'Shadow Fleet'
According to Espreso.tv: On June 14, the UK Prime Minister announced a successful military operation to intercept a Russian tanker belonging to the so-called 'shadow fleet.' The move was framed as another blow against Russia. The Prime Minister stated:
'I ordered our Armed Forces to intercept a shadow fleet tanker. This successful operation has dealt another blow to Russia.' Prime Minister of the United Kingdom
Earlier, on June 1, the French Navy detained a sanctioned Russian tanker in the Atlantic Ocean. French President Emmanuel Macron confirmed this was the first such seizure in that region. Notably, over half of the shadow fleet’s tankers are in critical condition, raising concerns among experts like Anil Sharma, head of GMS Partnership. These aging vessels pose significant safety and environmental risks.
Growing Focus on Maritime Enforcement
These operations highlight the increasing Western focus on controlling Russian maritime trade under sanctions imposed over Russia’s actions in Ukraine. At the same time, the poor state of the shadow fleet suggests potential logistical and safety challenges for Russia, which could undermine its ability to conduct international business effectively.
