190-Year-Old Church Destroyed in Russian Strike on Donetsk Region: The Story of the Holy Dormition Monastery.
Strike on the Holy Dormition Church
According to Espreso.tv: On November 19, 2025, the Mezhova community came under attack, damaging the Holy Dormition Church—a site with over 190 years of history. The settlement, located just 10 kilometers from the front line, witnessed destructive actions that have already harmed this sacred landmark.
Originally built in 1830, the church’s first structure was demolished by Soviet authorities in 1972. After years of reconstruction, a new church was consecrated on September 7, 2002. Tragically, it was struck again by Russian shelling on November 19, 2025, underscoring the ongoing volatility in the region.
Father Heorhiy, the church’s rector, shared his emotions after the attack: 'It is very hard to speak right now. This is the place where we all prayed together as a community. Here were our joys and our sorrows, our prayers for peace and for our defenders. But we will rebuild everything.'
These words reflect the community’s hope and determination despite the hardships.
Extent of the Destruction
Notably, against the backdrop of this attack, the Russian army destroyed the Church of the Nativity of the Blessed Virgin in Zakitne, Donetsk region, in late May. This further highlights the scale of devastation faced by religious communities in Ukraine.
This event is part of the broader context of the conflict in Ukraine, where religious buildings often fall victim to military operations. The destruction of churches not only damages cultural heritage but also impacts the spiritual life of local communities. Rebuilding such sites has become a symbol of resilience and unity for residents who continue their struggle for peace in the region.
