The Universe is Slowing Down: Astronomers Question the Theory of Accelerating Expansion.
Doubt in the Theory of Accelerating Expansion of the Universe
According to Korrespondent.net: Astronomers have revised one of the key contemporary cosmological theories concerning the accelerating expansion of the Universe, according to a report by The Guardian. New research suggests that cosmic expansion may be slowing down rather than accelerating, as has been believed for the past thirty years.
A team of researchers from South Korea analyzed around 300 galaxies containing exploding stars — type Ia supernovae. These stars are used as 'standard candles' for measuring cosmic distances. The scientists found that supernovae in the early Universe appeared dimmer than previously thought due to varying characteristics of the stars.
After correcting these errors, the researchers presented a new picture: the Universe continues to expand but is slowing down, and dark energy is gradually diminishing. If this energy were to disappear or become negative, the Universe could eventually 'collapse' in on itself.
Although the results raise skepticism, they have gained additional weight after an independent team from the Desi consortium reached similar conclusions earlier this year.
If these results are confirmed, it could fundamentally change our understanding of the future of the Universe. Instead of infinite expansion, the cosmos may transition into a phase of reverse Big Bang — the 'Big Crunch,' resulting in galaxies beginning to compress back.
The study was published in the scientific journal Monthly Notices of the Royal Astronomical Society.
It was previously reported that astronomers observed the birth of new worlds for the first time.
These new findings call into question established notions of the evolution of the Universe and how dark energy affects its future. If the observations are confirmed, this will open new horizons for cosmological research and serve as an impetus for further scientific developments in this field.
