Investigation Uncovers Fraud in Ukrainian Veterans' Prosthetics Program.
'Our Cause' Investigation
According to Novyny.live: The investigative project 'Our Cause' has examined Ukraine's state-funded prosthetics program for veterans, uncovering evidence of fraud and gross mismanagement of public funds. The full findings will be presented on February 27 at 21:00 on the 'News.LIVE' YouTube channel, based on evidence gathered by journalist Diana Lanovets from veterans, activists, officials, and experts.
Financial Mismanagement
A report from Ukraine's Accounting Chamber revealed the inefficient use of 22.9 million UAH in budget funds. Furthermore, an additional 65 million UAH was spent in violation of the law, with 6.5 million UAH showing clear signs of fraudulent activity. This situation highlights systemic failures in a program critical for the nation's recovery. The investigation identified several key issues, including:
- a complete lack of price control mechanisms;
- procurements conducted through unnecessary intermediaries;
- falsified data in work completion reports;
- the shocking practice of registering prosthetic limbs for deceased individuals.
The severe problems veterans face have sparked public outrage and demand immediate government action. One veteran from the 'Artan' unit described his rushed rehabilitation:
“I completed a course in three weeks that was designed to last two months.” - Veteran of the 'Artan' unit
Adding an international perspective, U.S.-based physical therapist Dr. Farhad Ostovari shared his motivation for assisting:
“I am motivated to share valuable experience with my Ukrainian colleagues.” - Farhad Ostovari
These findings expose who profits from veterans' prosthetics and underscore the urgent need for comprehensive reform in this sector. The 'Our Cause' investigation brings to light the critical challenges Ukrainian veterans endure, particularly regarding prosthetic care. The uncovered evidence points not only to fiscal ineptitude but to potential abuses that jeopardize the health and lives of those who sacrificed for their country. The state's response to these failures will be a decisive test of its commitment to supporting veterans and securing their essential needs.
