Sadovyi called for competitions to install memorials to heroes.
Lviv Mayor Andriy Sadovyi addressed an official letter to the Vice Prime Minister for Reconstruction Oleksiy Kuleba regarding the creation of architectural competitions for the installation of memorials to Heroes. The mayor of Lviv proposes to implement this at the state level. Andriy Sadovyi wrote about this on Facebook.
What Sadovyi proposes
The mayor of Lviv believes that memorial plaques should be installed not for the “master to earn money on it, but to preserve the memory for future generations.” In his beliefs, descendants should know at what cost the country was defended.
“More and more we see how in various cities of Ukraine commemorative signs and other memorial elements with a very low artistic level are being installed. They are placed in inconspicuous or undeveloped places, where the memorial element dissonates with the environment. The sacred and the mundane are not properly delineated. Often the cause of such cases, unfortunately, is the activity of unprofessional architects and artists looking for easy earnings. No one has the right to manipulate the feelings of the families of the heroes,” said the mayor of Lviv.
To reduce such situations, he sent an official letter to Vice Prime Minister for Reconstruction Oleksiy Kuleba and urged to introduce the practice of architectural competitions at the national level.
He emphasized that in Lviv such competitions have long been practiced, and they concern not only memorial elements but even road construction. According to Sadovyi, among the most striking examples is the Heroes of the Heavenly Hundred Memorial.
“It has become a place where people not only bring flowers once a year but often come together with friends and relatives. Thus, the memory acquires quite real forms and forms traditions. We do not preserve it somewhere outside the city, do not hide it in cold black granite. It lives with us. And it will be always so,” the mayor of Lviv emphasized.
Let us remind you, the state institution “National Military Memorial Cemetery” on August 1 determined the winner for the construction of the first stage of the National Military Memorial Cemetery within the Hatten territorial community in Kyiv region. The winner was the “Building Ua” consortium from Kyiv, reports “Glavcom” with reference to ProZorro. The price proposal of the winning firm amounted to 1.75 billion UAH, which is 41.96 million UAH less than the expected price of the customer (1.8 billion UAH). The first stage of the military cemetery's construction includes the arrangement of burial sectors, a parking lot, an access road, a fence, engineering networks, and the construction of a columbarium wall. In total, 12036 graves and 720 columbarium niches will be allocated for traditional burials.
