G20 Summit in Brazil: Ukraine demands enforcement of international warrant for Putin's arrest.
Ukrainian prosecutor calls for Putin's arrest during G20 summit
Ukraine's chief prosecutor Andriy Kostin reported that he had received information indicating the possible participation of Russian President Vladimir Putin in the G20 summit in Brazil next month. He urged Brazilian authorities to arrest Putin if he appears in the country.
The prosecutor noted that the international community must hold Putin accountable. "The Brazilian authorities, as a participant in the Rome Statute, should arrest him if he decides to arrive," Kostin said.
He also expressed hope that Brazil will confirm its democratic and legal status by arresting Putin. The prosecutor warned that failure to do so could create a precedent allowing criminal leaders to travel with impunity.
When asked about this, the International Criminal Court refused to comment.
An official court representative reiterated that he relies on member states and partners to execute its decisions, including arrest warrants. According to him, member states are obliged to cooperate under the court's founding treaty.
Despite the ICC warrant, Putin made an official state visit to Mongolia in September. Ukraine criticized the non-enforcement of the warrant as a violation of international justice. However, last year, at the BRICS meeting in South Africa, Putin participated online.
