Sanctions paralyze Russia's shadow fleet: how this will affect the aggressor country's economy.
Impact of sanctions on the Russian economy
According to UATV: Sanctions imposed by the United States and the United Kingdom significantly affect Russia's shadow fleet, which in turn threatens further stagnation of the Russian economy. The war against Ukraine has led to a decline in the gross domestic product (GDP) of the aggressor country, as well as significant economic losses due to the imposed sanctions. It is forecasted that by the end of 2025, Russia's GDP will reach a minimum level, indicating serious difficulties in the economy.
According to information, at least 20% of the vessels in Russia's shadow fleet have already stopped due to restrictions on maritime oil exports. These restrictions are expected to reduce Russia's revenues by no less than $30 billion per year. These figures highlight the gravity of the situation in which the Russian economy finds itself due to international pressure.
Efforts of the international community
Recently, delays of several tankers have been recorded, indicating the activity of the international community in combating Russia's shadow fleet. For example, on January 9, 2026, the tanker Olina was detained in the Caribbean Sea, as well as the tanker Bella 1, which was detained between Iceland and the British Isles. These actions are the result of the efforts of international forces aimed at limiting Russia's capabilities in transporting its energy resources.
Switzerland has also added 41 tankers associated with the shadow fleet to its new sanctions list, underscoring the global approach to combating Russian exports. Furthermore, Sweden has advocated for a complete ban on maritime services for vessels involved in the transportation of Russian energy resources. All these measures indicate an increasing international coordination in countering Russia's aggressive policy.
Volodymyr Zelensky noted that thanks to coordinated actions by some states, it was possible to stop at least 20% of the Russian fleet's vessels.
He emphasized that Russia is trying to compensate for these losses by attracting new ships. John Healy also reported on a military operation by the United States, during which the motor vessel Bella 1 was intercepted while heading to Russia.
In addition, a new package of European Union sanctions against Russia is expected in February, which may further complicate the situation for the country. Finland and Sweden plan to impose new tariffs on all goods and services from Russia, which could impact the aggressor's foreign trade.
Thus, sanctions that paralyze Russia's shadow fleet have serious consequences for the country's economy, particularly due to restrictions on oil exports and delays of vessels. The situation remains tense, and further international actions may further complicate Russia's position on the world stage. Growing coordination among states indicates the seriousness of the global response to Russia's actions, which may have lasting consequences for its economic stability.
