Major General Sergey Kuvaldin Formally Suspected

According to Novyny.live: Ukraine's Security Service (SBU) has formally declared Major General Sergey Kuvaldin of the Russian Federation a suspect in a missile strike on the 'Okhmatdyt' children's hospital in Kyiv. The attack, which occurred on July 8, 2024, was carried out using a strategic Kh-101 air-launched cruise missile fired from a Russian Tu-95MS strategic bomber. This assault resulted in the deaths of two civilians and left dozens more injured.

At the time of the missile strike, Sergey Kuvaldin served as First Deputy Commander and Chief of Staff of the Russian Aerospace Forces' Long-Range Aviation. Following this attack, he was promoted to Commander of the Long-Range Aviation of the Russian Armed Forces. Kuvaldin has been declared a suspect in absentia under Part 2 of Article 438 of the Criminal Code of Ukraine, which concerns violations of the laws and customs of war.

Severity of the Charges and Ongoing Investigation

It should be noted that Major General Kuvaldin is already named in a separate proceeding related to a missile attack on Lviv during the night of September 3-4, 2024. This pattern underscores the gravity of the allegations and the active efforts of Ukrainian law enforcement to investigate alleged war crimes. The SBU continues to work on the case, gathering evidence to hold those responsible to account.

Declaring Major General Kuvaldin a suspect marks a significant step in Ukraine's efforts to address war crimes committed during the ongoing armed conflict.

This case, alongside other similar investigations, demonstrates the commitment of Ukrainian authorities to pursue accountability for crimes against civilian populations. The deliberate targeting of a major pediatric hospital has been widely condemned internationally. These proceedings are being closely watched as part of broader efforts to establish legal responsibility for actions during the war.
