Ukrainian Security Service Busts Draft Evasion Ring, Seizes $300,000 from Military Doctor.
Corruption Network Uncovered in Ukraine
According to TSN.ua: The Security Service of Ukraine (SBU) has exposed a corruption network in the Dnipropetrovsk region that assisted eligible men in evading military conscription. During searches at the home of the head of a military medical commission, authorities discovered $300,000 in cash and evidence of abuses. The official had been issuing falsified medical certificates, which allowed draft evaders to legally avoid service in the Armed Forces.
The price for these illegal 'services' started at $2,500. The scheme also involved an employee of a territorial recruitment and social support center (TRSC) and a 58-year-old local resident. Investigators have documented over 20 instances of bribery. The suspects face up to 10 years in prison with property confiscation. This crackdown occurs as Ukraine continues its efforts to strengthen its military forces against the ongoing Russian invasion.
Abuses in the Ivano-Frankivsk Region
In a separate case in the Ivano-Frankivsk region, two TRSC sergeants were caught smuggling draft evaders into Romania for $8,000 each. More than 10 successful escapes have been documented. These incidents point to serious abuses that undermine the legitimate operations of the Armed Forces and other military units. The Security Service of Ukraine is continuing its investigation into the matter.
Uncovering corruption schemes related to mobilization evasion is a crucial step in Ukraine's fight against corruption, especially during wartime. Such actions can severely weaken the country's defense capabilities and erode trust in state institutions. Continued investigations in this area are critically important for ensuring legality and fairness in military service, which is vital for national security.
