Ex-Soldier Holding Russian Passport Arrested for Tracking Ukrainian Military Flights.
Former Military Man Detained
According to Espreso.tv: Ukraine’s Security Service (SBU) has apprehended a former serviceman from the Krynichansky district who possessed a Russian passport and is accused of monitoring the movements of Ukrainian military aircraft and helicopters. According to initial reports, the suspect was recruited by Russian intelligence agencies through the Telegram messaging app.
During a search of his residence, authorities discovered a Russian passport and a smartphone containing evidence of his alleged criminal activities. He has been formally charged under the Ukrainian Criminal Code with high treason. The detainee is currently held in custody without the possibility of bail. If convicted, he faces life imprisonment along with confiscation of his property.
Broader Security Landscape in Ukraine
This arrest comes amid heightened tensions in Ukraine. On the night of June 2, Russian forces launched a massive combined missile and drone strike against several Ukrainian cities. The attacks resulted in casualties in Kyiv and Dnipro, with additional injuries reported in the Kyiv region and Kharkiv.
The detention of the former soldier and his alleged ties to Russian intelligence highlight the ongoing security risks Ukraine faces during wartime. As the country continues to endure military aggression, internal security has become a critical priority, and the activities of agents who could supply the enemy with sensitive information pose a serious threat. This case also underscores the importance of counterintelligence efforts and the urgent need to safeguard national security amid external aggression.
