Russian Spy and Sabotage Unit Neutralized
According to TSN.ua: The Security Service of Ukraine (SBU) has announced the dismantling of a Russian intelligence sabotage unit that was plotting murders within Ukraine. Ten suspects were detained in the operation, with seven apprehended on Ukrainian soil and three others in Moldova. Ukraine's Prosecutor General, Ruslan Kravchenko, has confirmed the involvement of Russian special services in the case, highlighting the severity of the threat. This incident underscores the persistent attempts by Russian intelligence to destabilize Ukraine and its neighbors through covert operations.
According to the SBU, those detained face potential life imprisonment with asset confiscation. The group's intended targets included:
- Journalists
- Public activists
- A manager of a strategic enterprise
- Military personnel from the Main Intelligence Directorate of the Ministry of Defence
- Foreign Legion fighters
Methods and Broader Security Threat
Investigators revealed that, on orders from Russian intelligence, the group recruited Moldovan citizens to carry out targeted killings. To sow societal destabilization and panic, the perpetrators planned to employ various murder methods, including:
- Close-range shootings
- Car bombings
Their surveillance tactics involved disguising themselves as couriers and conducting photo and video reconnaissance.
The promised reward for carrying out the assassinations reached up to $100,000 USD. These actions point to a systematic threat posed by Russian special services and emphasize the critical importance of cooperation between Ukrainian and Moldovan law enforcement to prevent terrorist acts on the territory of both countries. The successful joint operation demonstrates effective cross-border security collaboration in the region.
