The 'Web' Operation

According to UATV: In June 2025, Ukraine’s Security Service (SBU) carried out a covert mission dubbed 'Web' that targeted multiple Russian military airfields. This operation stands as a major achievement for Ukrainian forces amid the ongoing war, resulting in the destruction of 41 aircraft. The airfields struck included:

  • 'Dyagilevo'
  • 'Olenya'
  • 'Ivanovo'
  • 'Bela'

Preparation for the 'Web' operation took over a year and a half. A key moment came on the night of May 31, 2025, when Ukrainian drones hit an oil refinery in Saratov and the 'Lazarevo' linear station in Kirov Oblast, destroying more than 500 enemy vehicles. Additionally, on May 30, 2025, Ukrainian forces eliminated an 'Iskander' missile system and two Tu-142 aircraft at the airfield in Taganrog.

The estimated value of Russia’s destroyed strategic aviation assets stands at $7 billion. As the commander of the Deep Strike direction at Ukraine’s Defense Intelligence (GUR) stated,

“Laptops are our greatest advantage and the reason why it is so difficult for Russia to destroy this program—because we are decentralized.”

Significance of the Operation

The attack on the 'Belaya' airfield in Irkutsk marked the first time since the war began in February 2022 that Ukrainian drones struck a target in Siberia, as reported by The New York Times. These events underscore the substantial progress Ukrainian forces have made in combat operations and their ability to execute complex military missions over vast distances.

The 'Web' operation not only highlights Ukraine’s growing military capabilities but also its capacity to deliver effective strikes deep behind enemy lines. This could significantly alter the strategic landscape in the region, increasing pressure on Russian military infrastructure and forcing adjustments in their defensive tactics. The loss of a large number of aircraft and equipment may reduce Russian combat readiness and shift the balance of power on the front lines.
